Kerry Ann Smith has dedicated her life to helping others. For the past 10 years, she has been using her compassionate nature and interpersonal skills to support and enhance the lives of seniors and individuals with unique and complex care needs. She has worked with many different agencies that support people with intellectual disabilities and senior population groups, as well as within the community, supporting individuals in independent living. Some of the organizations and long-term care facilities Kerry Ann has worked with include Hawthorne Place Care Center, Providence Healthcare, residential homes with Community Living York South, Montage Support Services, Solus Support Services, and Saint Vincent DePaul Society.

For most of her life, Kerry Ann has always maintained that she is engaged in a vision bigger than herself. At a very young age, her natural caregiving side was always noticed by others and considered her greatest gift. She was always looking after everyone, including her younger siblings, cousins, and friends.

Kerry Ann discovered her true passion when she began to care for her grandmother, who had suffered a brain aneurysm followed by a stroke when she was just 15 years old. At the time, Kerry Ann was living in the West Indies with her family, and immediately volunteered to return to Canada to care for her grandmother. After arriving in Canada, she lived with her grandmother, helping her with household cooking and cleaning, attending rehabilitation, providing medication support, accompanying her to doctor’s appointments and grocery shopping, and taking her on long walks.

The experience of caring for her grandmother impacted Kerry Ann so much that she began to volunteer her time at the Villa Colombo Homes For the Aged. There, she provided companionship to the seniors and engaged them in various activities. After doing this for some time, she needed to find employment to support herself and began applying for jobs in various industries, including food service, retail, health care, and entertainment. By the time Kerry Ann was 25 years old, she had experienced working about 20 jobs. At this point, she realized that something was missing, and she felt that she was off course, having strayed from doing what she loved the most: helping people in a meaningful way.

“I was taught to do my best, and that’s what I’ve been doing ever since.”

Despite this, Kerry Ann didn’t give up on her true calling, and at age 26 she went back to school to study the field of social work. She obtained her diploma with honours, and knew that from this moment on, whatever career she would have would be something that involved caring for people, where her heart truly lies. CareALot Respite Services was born from this mission.

Kerry Ann’s goals are to impact one life and family at a time. She knows that this goal can be achieved by building good rapport with each client and working closely with families and individuals to uncover their care needs. She also knows one of the best gifts you can give someone is your time, and when you add caring to it, you can make a whole lot of difference in someone’s world.
